Face oils are a skincare must. But with different skin types, they require a unique mix of ingredients, how are you supposed to know which oil is the one for your skin type? Let us help you figure it out.

Your moisturizer might be doing some of the hard work, but oils can give that extra boost that a cream can't do. Facial oils offer powerful and deep nourishment, unlike a moisturizer, they replace lost and low level natural oils (sebum) found from within our skin. As we age we loose our natural oils and it can cause overall lackluster appearance and dehydrated cells.

There are two types of oils: carrier oils and essential oils that have to be combined in order to work efficiently. Carrier oils are usually cold pressed from fruits and nuts. This gives them a strong penetrative ability that allows them to carry botanically derived essential oils deep into the skin.

Dry skin needs an oil rich in omegas and fatty acids, choose oils like Grape Seed, Vitamin E, Squalane, Borage, Marula, Jojoba, Camomile.

Best Carrier: Avocado oil is high in Vitamin E and sterolin, which softens the skin and protects from free radicals. It's also rich in lecithin, a lipid that helps deliver nutrients directly to the bloodstream and deeper layers of the skin.

Best Essential: Rose oil is active in promoting and retaining your skin's natural moisture levels thanks to its high levels of Vitamin A, which help to increase collagen production and Omega's 3 and 6, which strengthen your lipid barrier.

Those with sensitive skin might be wary of face oils, and quite rightly. Some essential oils can cause mayhem and cause flare ups, and anything unnaturally perfumed can be irritating too. So it's important to choose oils specially formulated to keep the skin calm and protect the skin barrier.

Any oil should add help add radiance to the skin if it's right for your skin type, but those that are formulated with a combination of oils and usually left on to work with your skin regeneration overnight, it can really help brighten from within.

When to Apply Face Oil

It might sound obvious, but to avoid trapping dirt or other nasties, your skin needs to be clean and make-up free. Most experts recommend layering your skincare by consistency, starting with the lightest products (serums) and finishing with the heaviest (moisturizers).

Always apply a serum before an oil but you can experiment with putting an oil under or over a moisturizer.

As for whether to apply morning or night, that’s down to personal preference. You can always ramp up your usage depending on how your skin reacts. If it’s crying out for more moisture, double down with twice a day applications.

Facial oils are traditionally associated with colder weather, when a tricky blend of plummeting temperatures and soaring central heating leaves even normally content skin tight and flaky. But that’s not to say they can’t be used all year round.



In the summer switch to a lighter oil, like jasmine and calendula, as they tend to have a fast absorption into the skin. They are lightweight and don’t make your skin sweat when you apply SPF on top. In winter, nourishing oils will repair dry, sensitive skin.

The golden rule is to always layer your SPF over oil, and never mix the two together. Blending them could affect the efficacy of your sun protection, and no one wants to end up burnt.
